Pokemon is found at different CP (Combat Power) levels, which more or less determines how powerful the pokemon will be. To raise a pokemon's CP, you will need two resources: Stardust, a common thing you get with each pokemon that you just capture, and the pokemon's specific candy, which can be obtained by catching duplicates of the pokemon you want to level up. For instance, to level up a Zubat's CP, you will need Stardust and Zubat candies. Likewise, to develop your pokemon, you'll have to use more of that pokemon's sweets, that will also dramatically raise the CP of that pokemon. As your character level increases, you will encounter higher grade pokemon in the wild and have the ability to level up the CP level of your pokemon more.
