The app is a tremendous hit on battery life as gameplay requires the app to be opened with your display on (Low Power Mode may be more useful than the app's battery saver mode). Ideally, Pokemon Go would get the iPhone M8 or M9 movement coprocessor and find your steps and action when the app isn't active, but for now, it doesn't request access to fitness task.
Speaking of spending cash, the in-game store offers a set of discretionary items, though they may merely be precious to really ambitious players. Much of the gear can be acquired through general play, by leveling up, and checking in at landmarks. In classic free-to-play style, nearly all the shop things only accelerate the creature collection process, whether you're using lures and incense to attract Pokemon or cracking lucky eggs for a temporary encounter bonus.
Compounding these problems is Go's high battery consumption. Even with the AR camera turned off and electricity saving option turned on, it is still possible to completely drain a year-old Samsung Galaxy S6 in less than two hours. Expect to put money into an outside battery if you don't own one already.
The actual gameplay is very different too. The AR-experience is awesome and oddly addictive. You must get out and go to find Pokemon, acquire things, hatch eggs, and the battle at gyms. Pokemon Go is entertaining in that way, but it is not Pokemon as you'd expect to come from a handheld Nintendo games console.
