In confirming Reeve's report in iOS through testing, when the Google account alternative is selected, the app presents a conventional Google in-app login, including needing another factor if this's enabled. Yet, neither the app nor Google's login procedure divulges the app gets total access. Seeing a Google account's Connected Programs & Sites link reveals the app's access status. (In Android, authentication happens without granting access, confirmed in testing and with several Android users. Just local permissions for contacts, camera, and other characteristics are allowed, with different prompts for each.)
In a statement late Monday, the game's programmer, Niantic, said that it was an error to request that amount of access, and the app only made use of a Google account's name and affiliated email address. Niantic's entire statement seems at the end of the article.
Pokemon Go is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play. Along with the game's availability in the U.S., New Zealand, and Australia, Pokemon Go is also now available in Germany.
